“ज़िम्मेदार राजा” कहानी एक ऐसे राजा की है जो अपने राज्यवासियों की गैर-जिम्मेदारी से दुखी रहता है। लोग सड़क पर कूड़ा और पत्थर फेंक देते हैं और उन्हें हटाने की परवाह नहीं करते। राजा उन्हें सबक सिखाने के लिए सड़क के बीच गड्ढे में सोने के सिक्के रखकर उसे बड़े पत्थर से ढक देता है। कई लोग उस रास्ते से गुजरते हैं, पर कोई भी पत्थर हटाने की कोशिश नहीं करता। जब राजा सबको बुलाकर पत्थर हटवाता है तो सब सिक्के देखकर चकित रह जाते हैं। राजा बताता है कि यदि वे जिम्मेदार होते तो इनाम उन्हीं का होता। यह सुनकर लोग शर्मिंदा होते हैं और जिम्मेदारी का महत्व समझते हैं।

“Alas! Why are my people so irresponsible?” he moaned.

“हाय! मेरे लोग इतने गैर-जिम्मेदार क्यों हैं?” वह आह भर कर बोला।
“Why do they not keep the roads clean?”, he thought for a while and said, “I must teach them a lesson.”
“व्हाय डू दे नॉट कीप द रोड्स क्लीन?”, ही थॉट फॉर अ वाइल और सेड, “आई मस्ट टीच देम अ लेसन.”
“वे सड़कें साफ़ क्यों नहीं रखते?” थोड़ी देर सोचने के बाद उसने कहा, “मुझे उन्हें सिखाना होगा।”
One night, he took a bag of gold coins with him and went to the main road.

एक रात उसने अपने साथ सोने के सिक्कों का थैला लिया और मुख्य सड़क पर गया।
His vizier was also with him.

He saw a pit in the middle of the road.

Then the king and the vizier covered the pit with a big stone.

Next day, a man came along the road in his cart which was full of coal.
